Tartans Sweep Dual Meets Again with Victories Against W&L and Allegheny

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Washington and Lee University and Allegheny College on Saturday, November 14 at the CMU Invite. The Tartans improved to 7-0 in dual meets for the year with a 170-91 victory against Washington and Lee and a 206-53 victory against Allegheny.

For the third straight meet the Tartans started with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with swims from senior Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton),  freshman Winston Chu  (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), junior Sivan Metha (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and junior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) who finished in 1:36.61.

Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 9:40.75. He also claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.34. Junior Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) touched in 4:56.88 for third place in the 500 event.

Mehta picked up a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best touch of 53.56 and won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.43. Sophomore Benjamin Pierce (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.40 before taking fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.71, while Jin took third in 2:02.18. Geier also swam the 200-yard freestyle, touching second in a season-best 1:46.20.

Chu led the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.68. He was chased by senior Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) who placed second in 1:01.20 while Jin took third in 1:01.56. Chu also led a sweep in the 200-yard breaststroke touching in a season-best 2:10.62 with Jay behind him in 2:10.86 and Podniesinski in third in 2:15.31.

The 200-yard butterfly saw Riek claim first place with a season-best time of 1:53.99 for his third victory of the day. Senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) won the 200-yard IM with a season-best time of 2:00.69

In the sprint freestyles, Jay took third in the 50-yard event with a time of 21.83 while freshman Jack Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) was second in the 100-yard event in 48.13.

The Tartans will next compete Thursday, December 3 through Saturday, December 5 in the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College. Events start at 5:30 p.m. each day, and 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
