Competition at UAA Championships Begins

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team started competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Thursday, February 18. The team is currently in sixth place after six events.

Freshman Gabriel Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) bettered his own school record on the three-meter diving board when he earned All-UAA honors, placing second, with 516.25 points.

Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) swam to a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, touching in a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:32.90.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of junior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), junior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga), senior Joseph Robinson (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) and freshman Jack Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) placed fifth in a time of 1:24.72.

Senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) won his finals heat, placing 17th overall in the 200-yard IM in a season-best time of 1:54.35.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Dangremond touched 10th overall in a career-best time of 21.10.

The 400-yard medley relay closed Thursday's action with a sixth-place finish. Mehta, sophomore Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), Riek and Dangremond touched in a season-best time of 3:26.45.

Competition picks up on Friday with seven more swimming events.
