Bamforth Takes 1M Title at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - Carnegie Mellon University senior Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass. / CRLS) kicked off the 2019 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships with a championship showing for the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team. The championship meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago from Wednesday, February 13 through Saturday, February 16.

Bamforth earned the championship title on the 1-meter diving board, marking the second championship performance of his career. On Wednesday, Bamforth entered the finals after scoring the second highest point total in the preliminaries with 446.80 points. After 11 additional dives, Bamforth tallied a score of 499.25 to top second-place finisher, Lucas Bumgarner of Emory University who had 472.10 points.

As a freshman, Bamforth won the same title before finishing second on the 1-meter board as a sophomore and a junior.

Freshman James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) also made the finals round of the event, finishing seventh with a score of 383.85.

The meet continues on Thursday with swimming events and women's diving. Bamforth and the rest of the men's divers will be in action again on Friday.
