Tartans Win First Dual Meet of Year at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team had its first dual meet of the season on Saturday, October 30 at Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans won the meet 184-116 after winning 11 of 16 events.

Diving kicked off the meet with senior James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) winning the 1-meter event with 282.10 points after six dives. Junior Matthew Wagner (Mason, Ohio / Wiliam Mason) was second with 271.90 points and senior Jud Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) was third with 254.30 points. The 3-meter was won by Jud Kyle with 292.95 points with his brother James finishing second with 289.20 points and Wagner third with 279.90 points. With the day's events, James Kyle earned two NCAA qualifying scores while Jud earned the mark on the 3-meter board.

The 200-yard medley relay of senior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), freshman Christian Lanuza (Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich), senior Aleksander Tarczynski (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) and junior Erik Feldmann (Yakima, Wash. / West Valley) took first with a completed time of 1:33.41.

Britton continued his team dominance in the 100-yard backstroke with a first-place finish in 51.47 after swimming the event for the first time this year. He also won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.90. Freshman Kevin Kyi (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) was just after Britton in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.46 with sophomore Taiyo De Jong (New York, N.Y. / Bronx HS of Science) touching third in 53.79.

Lanuza was the top breaststroker for the day for the Tartans, as he finished first in the 100-yard event in a time of 56.64 while freshman Sammy Telanoff (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) dominated the 200-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 2:05.83, nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Feldmann also picked up a first-place finish when he touched in 46.19 to lead a Tartans sweep of the 100-yard freestyle.

Senior Sean Ream (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) was the first to finish the 100-yard butterfly, as he touched in 51.51.

Telanoff finished off the individual events with a near two-second win in the 200-yard IM in 1:54.54 with senior Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) touching second in 1:56.50.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of junior Yousef Hassen (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands), Feldmann, junior Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East) and Britton closed the meet with a first-place finish in a season-best time of 1:23.81.

The Tartans will next compete at home when they host Gettysburg College for a dual meet on Saturday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m.
