Jud Kyle Wins 3-Meter Event at NCAA Diving Regional

(ITHACA, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's diving team had five competitors at the 2023 NCAA Division III Region 4 Diving Championships hosted by Ithaca College on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. Graduate student Jud Kyle earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by placing second on the 1-meter board on Friday before winning the 3-meter board on Saturday night.

Inside The Results

  • Jud Kyle started the meet with a second-place showing on the 1-meter board on Friday with 515.55 points.
  • Graduate student James Kyle placed third on the 1-meter board with 504.45 points.
  • Senior Matthew Wagner, sophomore Jonathan Lindstrom, and junior Tyler Hoyt finished 10th, 11th, and 12th on the 1-meter board.
  • Jud took the championship on the 3-meter board on Saturday with a score of 557.45 points.
  • James earned a second third-place finish, and also qualified for the NCAA Championships, on the 3-meter board with 515.65 points.
  • Wagner placed sixth on the 3-meter board with a point total of 494.75.
  • Lindstrom placed 12th on the 3-meter with 452.10 points and Hoyt was 14th with 415.30 points.

Notes

  • Region 4 sends five divers to the NCAA Championships based on having 18 competitors in the region.
  • Jud's win on the 3-meter marks the second regional championship for a Tartan men's diver, as he matches his brother James's victory last year.
  • The Kyle twins will each compete at the NCAA Championships for the second time, but first time together since they were unable to compete in 2020 after qualifying.
  • Jud earned All-America Honorable Mention on the 3-meter board as a freshman after finishing 11th at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
  • James earned All-America on the 3-meter board last year after placing fourth.
  • This marks the first time two men's divers will compete at the NCAA Championships.
