Tartans Finish Fall with Play at ITA Southeast Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team had nine members travel to the University of Mary Washington for the ITA Southeast Regional on Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2. The group collected two doubles victories and 10 singles victories with one player making the quarterfinals.

On Friday, four different doubles pairings for the Tartans received byes in the round of 48 with the two victories coming in the round of 32. Sophomores Arjan Bedi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) and Jaden D'Abreo (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) were seeded ninth and won their match against Stephen Alam and Kier Nacua of St. Mary's College, 8-1. Sophomore Nicholas Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Academy) and freshman Wiliam Wang (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) were also victorious on Friday, defeating Andrew Cooper and Ryan Meyer of University of Mary Washington, 8-2.

Sophomore Brandon Aprill (Mountain View, Calif. / The Menlo School) won two singles matches on Friday, topping Nicolas Stromberg of Marymount College, 6-1, 6-2, and Marco Azar of Johns Hopkins University, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Wernink and junior Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) were also double winners on Friday. Wernink bested Drake of SVU, 6-4, 6-3, and Andreas Wingert of Haverford, 6-3, 6-2. Nottingham took down Alam, 6-3, 6-0, and Brad Pappalardo of Salisbury Univesity, 6-2, 6-2.

Aprill made it out of the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Jorge Figueroa of Averett University before falling in tight match against Marcos Dias of Southern Virginia University, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

That concludes play for the men's tennis team for the fall season with their next competition scheduled for February 19 with a pair of dual matches hosted by Oberlin College.
