Tartans Out Hit Opponents in Opening Day Split

(CLERMONT, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team kicked off it's 2020 campaign with an 8-6 loss to Elizabethtown College (5-6) and an 11-8 win against Cornell College (1-3) on Saturday, March 7 at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

Sophomore Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) hit safely in two at bats, scoring both times, against Elizabethtown. The Tartans out hit the Blue Jays 10-8 but spotted them four runs in the first inning on five walks and a hit batter.

Sophomore Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) scored the first run of the game for the Cardinal and Gray after doubling to centerfield with two outs. Freshman Isabel Bermudez (Austin, Texas / Dripping Springs) knocked her in after reaching on an error by the leftfielder who misjudged a liner that hit off her glove.

In the fourth inning, Schwartz scored her second run of the game when freshman Tessa Bruneau (Edgewater Park, N.J. / Holy Cross Prep) beat out an infield hit with two outs to bring the Tartans within one run of tying the game at 6-5.

Schwartz took the loss on the mound giving up eight hits and 10 walks in 4.0 innings.

Against Cornell, the Tartans scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning on seven hits. Both sophomore Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) and Hu had two hits in the inning, scoring both times they reached base.

Sophomore Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) recorded six strikeouts in the first two innings before giving up a run in the top of the third. Hu recorded her third hit of the game and second RBI in the bottom of the third to put the Tartans back up by 10 runs.

The Rams scored the final seven runs of the game including two in the final inning before McGee recorded the final out with her 11th strikeout of the game.

Scheinman and Hu both finished the game with three hits while Bruneau and Pederson each had two hits. Bruneu also stole three bases and scored two runs in the win.

The Tartans continue action on Sunday with a 9:00 a.m. game against Ursinus College and a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Marietta College.
