Tartans Earn Second Straight Sweep with Two Wins Against Hiram

(MUNHALL, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University softball team swept Hiram College in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 20, with the games being played at West Field in Munhall, Pennsylvania, not far from Carnegie Mellon's campus. The Tartans are now 9-6 for the year while Hiram dropped to 6-6.

Game 1 - W, 6-2

Senior Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up one run while scattering two hits and striking out four to earn her first win of the season in her second start. Senior Gwen Delacruz (Laguna Nigel, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) earned the save after pitching 3.0 innings where she surrendered three hits and one run.

The Tartan bats pounded out 13 hits with junior Izzy Bermudez (Austin, Texas / Dripping Springs) going 3-for-4 and senior Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) and freshman Libby Eichberger (Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley) each collecting two hits in four at bats. Eichberger extended her hitting streak to 12 games and recorded her first extra-base hit with a triple in the first inning to score Song who started the game with a single up the middle. Song singled in two runs in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tartans a 3-1 lead.

Hiram loaded the bases in the sixth inning but with two outs, sophomore Kiera Boucher (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) made a sliding grab in right field for the third out of the inning to preserve the Tartans 4-1 lead.

Senior Megan Hu (Katy, Texas / Seven Lakes) then hit a double in the sixth inning with one out and later scored on an RBI single by senior Audrey Pederson (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford). The sixth run of the game for the Tartans came off the bat of Bermudez who singled through the right side to plate junior Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif. / Martin Luther King) who reached on a single to the pitcher before Pederson's at bat.

Hiram tried mounting a comeback in seventh but Delacruz was about to get a ground out, strike out, and a foul ball fly out to end the game with two runners left on base.

Game 2 - W 3-2

Senior Amanda Schwartz (Fairfield, N.J. / West Essex Regional) earned her second win of the season after five solid innings of pitching with sophomore Amanda Smith (New Cumberland, Pa. / Trinity) picking up the save after striking out five batters in 2.0 innings of work. Schwartz scattered seven hits while allowing just one run in her five innings, leaving with a 3-1 lead.

The Tartans gathered five hits against Jeskari Rodriguez with Boucher recording an RBI double in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1. Freshman Erika Heffernen (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown), who had two hits in the game, singled to right field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to score freshman Abbey Reese (Whitehall, Pa. / Whitehall) and Bermudez.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Smith allowed a walk and a deep double to center field which scored the runner, before striking out Angel Santellan to end the game.
