Tartans Split Action with League Leading WashU

(FOX CHAPEL, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team began their four-game series with Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, April 20 at Shady Side Academy Senior School. The Tartans played two games, winning the first by a score of 5-4 in eight innings. They dropped the second game by a 9-5 score to move to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Bears are now 21-9 and 10-4.

Inside the Box Score of Game One:

  • The Bears opened the scoring in the first inning with an unearned run when Sydney Schneider stole home with one out after Natalia Pilpil reached on an error that advanced Schneider to third.
  • The Bears scored again in the top of the third on another first and third situation where the Tartans took the out on the steal attempt.
  • The Tartans answered in the bottom of the fourth after sophomore Maya Goodwin scored off an RBI from sophomore Koko Sagae, making the score 2-1. Goodwin tripled with one out and raced home on a fielder's choice ground ball to second.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Abbey Reese doubled to right center to plate Sagae who singled up the middle, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The tying run forced extra innings.
  • The Bears scored two runs in the top of the eighth off a squeeze bunt attempt by Pilpil with no outs and runners on second and third. An error on the play pushed the second run across the plate.
  • The Tartans won the game in the bottom of the eighth after freshman Allison Li singled to right center and advanced to second earning two RBIs when sophomore Kira Monji and sophomore Maya Goodwin scored ahead of an error by the outfielder which pushed Sagae across the plate for the winning run.
  • Senior Amanda Smith tied her season school record of nine wins with the complete-game victory. She scattered five hits and struck out four batters.

Inside the Box Score of Game Two:

  • After a quiet first inning, the Bears took control of the game with three runs in the top of the second.
  • The Bears earned another run in the top of the third off a home run by Pilpil.
  • Senior Kiera Boucher homered out to left field with two outs in the third inning to make the score 4-1.
  • The Tartans then tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Maddy Beall earned a pinch-hit single that scored Goodwin from second. Junior Faith Lawrence then stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and blasted the pitch over the left-center field fence to make the score 4-4.
  • After an RBI single by Pilpil in the fifth inning, Boucher hit her second home run of the game, this time to center field to once again tie the score.
  • Another run for the Bears was scored in the top of the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh, making the score 9-5.
  • The Tartans left three runners on base in the seventh inning.
  • Sophomore Grace Fujino pitched a solid game allowing just three earned runs in seven innings.
