Tartans Split Midweek Action at Geneva

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a doubleheader at Geneva College on Wednesday, April 24, splitting action after winning game one by a 6-4 score and falling in game two, 12-9. The Tartans are now 15-15 overall while Geneva moved to 22-14.

Game 1

  • The Tartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Geneva took a 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
  • The Tartans then scored four straight runs to lead 6-3 going into the final three outs.
  • Junior Libby Eichberger led the Tartans with three hits while senior Kiera Boucher and sophomore Kira Monji each had two hits.
  • Boucher led off the game with a triple and then pulled off a double steal with Monji for the game's first run. Monji then scored after an error during sophomore Koko Sagae's at bat.
  • Monji singled in a run in the fourth inning while Eichberger earned an RBI on an infield single and Boucher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth.
  • The last run of the game for the Tartans came in the seventh inning when Sagae hit a sacrifice fly to score Eichberger who reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Senior Amanda Smith earned the win after pitching 5.0 innings with six strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Grace Fujino collected a save after pitching 2.0 innings.

Game 2

  • Fujino started the game and surrendered three hits and one run in 2.0 innings.
  • The Tartans trailed 1-0 after the first inning but scored a run in the second and then four in the third to lead 5-1 before Geneva knocked in three runs in the bottom of the third.
  • After four innings, Geneva led 8-5.
  • The fifth inning witnessed three runs by the Tartans which tied the game before Geneva added four in the bottom of the inning.
  • Eichberger had one hit in four at bats and knocked in two runs.
  • Boucher, Sagae, and sophomore Maya Goodwin each scored twice.

The Tartans will travel to Case Western Reserve University (28-5, 13-3) for a four-game series to end University Athletic Association (UAA) action. The series starts on Friday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m.
