Weslock Records Second Career Double-Double as Tartans are Topped by NYU

(NEW YOR, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team played the Violets of New York University on Sunday afternoon in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest and dropped a 61-52 contest in the Big Apple. The Tartans move to 11-11 and 2-9 in UAA play while the Violets are now 13-8, 5-6.

Junior Katie Higgins (Montclair, N.J.) and senior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) led the Tartans with 14 points each. Mayberger converted 6-of-7 from the floor, as the 14 points marked a season-best while Higgins finished the day making 6-of-10. Freshman Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich.) recorded her second career- double-double with 10 points and a career-best 14 rebounds.

Lauren Koyama led NYU with 26 points while Shaye McGoey chipped in with 12.

The first quarter saw three lead changes and two ties with the Tartans leading 13-10 at the close of the frame. Carnegie Mellon led by as many as three on two different occasions with the last coming with 3:17 to play when Weslock drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc. The field goal proved to be the last of the quarter.

Carnegie Mellon used a 9-2 run midway through the second quarter and took its largest lead of the game at 25-16 with six minutes to play. Over the last 5:52 of the quarter, NYU scored 12 straight points and led 28-25 at the break.

The Tartans knotted the score at 31-31 two minutes into the third quarter following a triple by Higgins and an and-one by Mayberger. NYU once again answered and scored seven of the next nine points over the next 2:30 and led 38-31 before taking a 45-41 advantage into the last quarter.

Koyama opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers which extend the home teams lead to 51-41. Carnegie Mellon didn't get closer than seven points the rest of the way and NYU went on for the 61-52 win.

Carnegie Mellon will return home on Friday, February 15 for a 6:00 p.m. tip against the Yellow Jackets of the University of Rochester.
