Tartans Fall to Undefeated #1 NYU

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to compete against the 1st-ranked New York University Violets on Friday, February 21. The Tartans lost to the Violets, 83-52. This puts the Tartans at 18-4 overall and 8-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while the Violets are undefeated at 23-0 overall and 12-0 in the conference.
How it Happened
- A minute in, senior Anisha Chintala scored the first points for the Tartans with a three-pointer assisted by freshman Payton Baney.
- With 2:54 remaining in the first quarter, Caroline Peper scored a three-pointer for the ninth point in a row for the Violets, putting them ahead 20-5.
- The Tartans shot 5-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long distance in the second quarter.
- Sophomore Anna Prouty led the Tartans in the second quarter with two free throws and a layup.
- The Violets kept their lead, entering the third quarter with a 45-22 advantage.
- The Tartans climbed to within 10 points in the third quarter before trailing by 16 to close the frame. They shot 8-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-4 from long distance, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
- Catherine Or led the Tartans in the third quarter by scoring 14 of the team's 24 points.
- The Violets scored in bunches in the fourth quarter while the Tartans scored a total of six points, leading to the 31-point win for the home team.
Tartan Stats
- Or led the team with 16 points, making 6-of-10 from the floor. She also had three rebounds.
- Chintala had 15 points and Baney had a team high of five assists.
- Junior Ava Arias had a team high of four rebounds.
Violet Stats
- The Violets hit 33-of-71 (46.5%) from the floor and 12-of-34 (35.3%) from behind the arc.
- Natalie Bruns led the team with 21 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor, and grabbed 10 rebounds.
- Peper had 19 points and six assists while Mary Kate Fahey scored 15 off the bench.
- Belle Pellecchia finished with 14 points, five assists, and four steals.
