#10 Tartans Top Grove City, 2-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team topped Grove City College at home on Wednesday, September 12 by a 2-0 score. The unbeaten Tartans are now 4-0-1 while the Wolverines dropped to 2-3.

The first goal of the game was scored in the 10th minute by senior Kaily Bruch (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South). Senior Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Bishop Montgomery) threw a long ball into the box where senior Katja Brackelmanns-Puig (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph) flicked it back to Bruch who finished the play with a header to the far corner of the net. The score marked the second of the year for Bruch.

Junior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) had a close shot on goal in the 41st minute after she received a pass from freshman Daisy Gollis (Irvine, Calif. / Tarbut V'Torah) to the center of the box. Durstewitz's header was placed towards the left of Grove City's keeper Columbia Harkrader who made a diving save.

Another long throw by Allen in the 53rd minute was dangerous as a defender headed the ball out but right to Bruch, who immediately headed a shot that was tipped out by the goalie.

A near post shot by Durstewitz in the 71st minute deflected off the defender and snuck behind the Wolverine keeper for the second goal of the game and Durstewitz's second goal of the season, adding to the Tartans' lead.

Sophomore keeper Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) recorded her third straight shutout, making one save for the game.

The next match for the Tartans is home against fifth-ranked Messiah College on Saturday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.

On her thoughts of the game:
"I think we played really well. We worked on a lot of what we did in practice. We created a lot of opportunities from the outside in. We worked really hard and we never gave up."

On the goal she scored:
"I saw the ball from across the field and usually our outside steps into the outside back. So I just went and didn't hesitate when I won it I just thought kick it, and when it went in I was so happy."
