(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted Grove City College for a midweek contest on Wednesday, September 14. Sophomore Catherine MacNichol led the Tartans to a 3-0 win with two goals to give the home team a 3-1-1 record while the Wolverines drop to 2-3.

Inside The Box Score

  • MacNichol's first goal came in the 18th minute of play after she was able to toe poke a shot to the left corner following a service into the box by junior Breana Valentovish. MacNichol first tried to head the ball but it skimmed by her and landed at the foot of a defender, but it wasn't controlled giving MacNichol the opening for the toe poke.
  • Prior to MacNichol's goal, senior Helena Spencer had two shots inside the 18-yard box blocked by a defender.
  • In the 25th minute, graduate student Olivia Dion struck a shot that was pushed over the bar by the keeper, preventing Dion from scoring her first career goal for the Tartans.
  • Grove City nearly equalized in the 50th minute when Anna Jenkins ripped a shot curling to the far post that senior Olivia Brand had to grab out of the air.
  • MacNichol added to her season total of four goals in the second half with a shot in the 58th minute. The play once again started with Valentovish who curled a pass deep into the box where sophomore Sophia Bastek one-touched it across box for MacNichol who beat the defender to the ball for a one-touch strike to the left post.
  • Sophomore Emma Shirzad added to the score in the 74th minute when she picked off a misplayed pass about 30 yards out. She took a couple touches forward before simply placing a shot low under the charging keeper.

Notes

  • MacNichol has now scored in four straight games and recorded her first career multi-goal game tonight.
  • Brand and freshman Abby O'Connor split time in goal sharing a shutout for the second time this season.
  • The goal for Shirzad was her first career tally.
