Tartans Selected to NCAA Championships Field, Will Host First and Second Rounds
(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - The seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team received an at-large bid to the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship after finishing second in the University Athletic Association. The Tartans have been selected to host the first and second rounds with play to begin Saturday, November 16. The appearance in the NCAA tournament marks the 11th in 12 years for the program which finished the regular season with an 11-2-4 overall mark.
The Tartans started the year ranked 19th in the nation and opened their season with a close scoreless tie at third-ranked Messiah College followed by a 4-1 win against 20th-ranked William Smith College at home the following weekend. Carnegie Mellon finished the non-conference season with a 7-0-3 mark before opening the University Athletic Association (UAA) slate as the fourth-ranked team in the nation. The seven-game UAA schedule had the Tartans face five nationally ranked teams with a sixth receiving votes in the national coaches poll. The Tartans finished second in the league after a 3-0 start with three shutouts, closing the regular season with a victory at Case Western Reserve University for a 4-2-1 record.
The NCAA Selection Committee rewarded the Tartans for their season to date with hosting privileges for the first and second rounds. Joining Carnegie Mellon in a four-team bracket is Mount St. Joseph (12-3-4), North Central College (16-4-1) and Illinois Institute of Technology (18-2-2). The Tartans will open the tournament on Saturday against Mount St. Joseph, winners of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) at 11:00 a.m. while North Central, winners of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) will face Illinois Tech, winners of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) at 1:30 p.m.
The Tartans have had success in the national tournament, advancing past the second round seven times, including in 2022 when the team last hosted the first two rounds, while the 2019 team played in the national semifinal for the first time in program history. In 10 years in the tournament, the Tartans have a 17-7-4 record with 17 shutouts. The Tartans have also hosted the opening weekend six times before, advancing through the four-team bracket each time, while holding an 13-2-1 record at home during the NCAA tournament.
