400-Yard Medley Relay Highlights Tartans at Day One of UAA Championships

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving competed at the first day of the University Athletic Association Championships Thursday, February 16.  The championships are being held in Cleveland, Ohio hosted by Case Western Reserve University.

The Tartans' 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway), junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and sophomores Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) finished the first day of competition on a high note for the Tartans.   The relay team turned in a second-place showing touching the wall with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:54.04.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay the team of Stillo, Sheehan, Garvey and senior Hannah Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) also turned in a season-best time.  They placed fifth with a time of 1:38.41.

Stillo finished with a career-best time of 24.01 in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle placing fifth.  Senior Victoria Adams (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) turned in a season-best time of 5:05.02 in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle before placing eighth in the finals with a time of 5:06.00.  Phan placed eighth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.62 which is also a season-best time. 

Competition resumes Friday in Cleveland with the preliminaries at 10:00 a.m. and the finals to begin at 6:00 p.m.
