Tartans Sweep UAA Opponents at Rochester

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team opened the season at University of Rochester with a double dual meet against the host Yellowjackets, Case Western Reserve University and New York University. The Tartans swept the three University Athletic Association opponents tallying over 200 points against each.

The Tartans started the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay behind a time of 4:03.60. Freshman Debbie Lin (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga), junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), sophomore Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) and freshman Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) took the pool.

In the third event, junior Sarah Menio (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) finished third in the mixed 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:52.51 behind two male swimmers. In the women's 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Kaeli Halbersleben (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) finished second in a time of 18:09.53.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay finished third as Stillo, senior Hannah Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), sophomore Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy) and Sheehan touched in 1:42.29.

Phan took first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.91 in the second individual race on Friday night. The evening session ended with the 800-yard freestyle relay finishing second with senior Victoria Adams (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford), Halbersleben, sophomore Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Wendy Liu (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) touching the wall in 8:07.31.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Lin, Stillo, Phan and Sheehan started Saturday with a win in 1:52.31.

Phan picked up another first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.75 as Sheehan won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.38. Stillo then won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.27 before Liu touched first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:14.99 and the 400-yard IM in 4:42.60.

Junior Price Kinney (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.63 while Halbersleben was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.37.

In diving, senior Olivia DeFazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished second on the one-meter board and seventh on the three-meter board.

The Tartans will be home on Saturday, November 5, when Clarion visits Pittsburgh at 11:00 a.m.
