Tartans Take Third Place at UAA Championships

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team finished third at the University Athletic Association Championships which ended Saturday night after three days of competition. The women tallied 1,125 points and were just behind University of Chicago with 1,288 points while Emory University won the meet with 2,112 points.

Senior Victoria Adams (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) started the evening with a seventh-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 17:41.66 while freshman Kaeli Halbersleben (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) touched ninth in 17:45.80.

Freshman Debbie Lin (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) won the consolation final of the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 2:06.99 while freshman Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) was third in the consolation final in 2:08.40. Senior Sarah Stroup (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) also made the consolation final of the 200-yard backstroke, finishing eighth in 2:14.22.

Sophomore Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) and junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) swam in the finals of the 100-yard freestyle finishing sixth and seventh with respective times of 52.78 and 53.23.

Junior Price Kinney (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:24.59 while sophomore Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy) made the finals with a preliminary time of 2:28.50 but was disqualified during the final run.

In the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa../Villa Maria Academy) finished eighth with a time of 2:08.94. Senior Hannah Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) swam in the consolation finals and finished third in a time of 2:10.87 ahead of three teammates who finished fourth, sixth and eighth.

Those that made an NCAA provisional mark throughout the year will now wait to hear if they made the draw for the championship meet which will be hosted in Indianapolis, Ind., from March 21-24.
