Tartans Win 11 Events in Double Dual Victories

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team defeated SUNY Geneseo and Westminster College on Saturday, January 19 in the seniors last home meet of the season. The Tartans won 11 events to defeat Geneseo 189-108 and Westminster 206-93.

The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), freshman Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley), junior Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and senior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) started the meet with a win in 1:49.76.

The Tartans won all the freestyle events with sophomore Kaeli Halbersleben (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) taking first in the 1,650-yard event in 18:28.64 and Garvey winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.97. Freshman Elizabeth Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:34.74.

Junior Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) won both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle in 1:56.45 and 54.70, respectively. Sophomore Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) was second in the 200-yard event in 1:58.72 as freshman Hannah Hoffert (Midlothian, Va./James River) was third in the 100-yard event in 55.83. Stillo placed first in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 24.48 with freshman Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) placing second in 24.89.

Singhaus won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.59 and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:12.84 with freshman Paige Sieffert (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) taking third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:13.19.

Wang took first place in the 100-yard breastroke in 1:08.42 and third in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.60.

Garvey earned her second victory of the day in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.91 with sophomore Wendy Liu (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) touching second in 2:13.32. Phan won her third event of the day in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.90 with Suzuka earning her second second-place finish in 58.95.

Sheehan won the final event of the day for the Tartans in the 400-yard IM in 4:41.24 with Liu finishing second in 4:46.21.

In diving, sophomore Winona Li (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) was third on the 3-meter board with 194.65 points and third on the 1-meter board with 186.55 points.

The team heads to Denison University to face the Big Red next on Saturday, January 26.
