Seven First Place Finishes Lead Tartans to Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team swept two events and had seven top finishers to beat Clarion University 186.5-111.5 on Saturday morning, November 2.

The Tartans swept the 200-yard butterfly.  Senior Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) with a time of 2:14.56, Sophomore Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) at 2:17.00, and Sophomore Liz Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) at 2:22.17 placed one, two and three, respectively.

The Tartans then took the top three slots in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) took first with a time of 55:03, Suzuka second finishing at 55:05 and senior Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) in a close third at 55.13.

There were six individual first-place finishes for the Tartans for the day.  Phan took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.32.  

Junior Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle completing the race in 2:00.90.

Freshman Lauren Zemering (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) finished the 50-yard freestyle in 25.22 to take first place.

Hitting the wall at 5:17.41, Freshman Kimberly Klausing (North Potomac, Md./Thomas Wootton) completed the 500-yard freestyle for another individual title for the Tartans.

Other top finishes of the day were by Freshman Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.46 and Freshman Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) scoring 231.23 to win diving.  

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Suzuka, Kirkby, Zemering, and Crews were first to tap the wall with a time of 1:40.26.

The Tartans will compete again at Grove City College on November 9.
