Tartans Begin Competition at Kenyon's Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming team traveled to Kenyon College for the annual Total Performance Invitational and began competition on Thursday, December 5 with two events. The Tartans swam against some of the country's best in University of Pennsylvania, Davidson College, Grove City College, DePauw University, Johns Hopkins University and Kenyon.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman), senior Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), junior Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) and freshman Lauren Zemering (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) started the meet with a 12th-place finish. The combination finished the event in 7:45.55. The Tartans B team in the event consisted of sophomore Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), freshman Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga), freshman Kim Klausing (North Potomac, Md./Thomas Wootton) and junior Nicole Crimi (Eureka, Mo./Visitation Academy) who touched in 7:58.08, as it was the Tartans first time swimming that event.

For the first time this season, the Tartans also competed in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Klausing was the top Tartan to complete the event, finishing 23rd in a time of 17:55.13. Sophomore Liz Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) also swam in the event, finishing 28th in career-best 18:25.54.

The Tartans will continue competition at the meet on Friday, December 6 with preliminaries starting at 9:30 a.m. and finals set for 5:30 p.m.
