Women Swimmers Invited to Compete at NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Five women swimmers from the Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team have been invited to compete at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. This marks the fifth year under head coach Matt Kinney that at least one female swimmer has qualified for the championship meet.

Seniors Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) will be returning to the championships for the second time in their careers as both were invited in an individual event and qualified in multiple others. The two earned All-America Honorable Mention in the 800-yard freestyle relay when they participated in the national meet as freshmen.

Garvey set the school record in the 200-yard butterfly at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships and was invited to the NCAA meet in the same event. She currently has the ninth best time in the nation at 2:04.28. She will also swim the 100-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Phan was invited to swim the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay. Her time of 4:59.66 in the freestyle is a career best and is 19th in the nation. She will also compete in the 400-yard IM, 100-yard freestyle, both medley relays and the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Freshman Gillian Crews (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) was invited to the championships in the 100-yard butterfly, an event she holds the school record in. Crews set the school record with a time of 56.21 and is currently 12th in the nation. Crews is also on the 400-yard medley relay team that was invited to compete with a school record time of 3:50.39. She will also swim in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, both medley relays and the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Sophomores Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and Felicia Wang (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) are part of the school record holding 400-yard medley relay team and additionally qualified in individual events. Singhaus will swim the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events and the 200-yard medley relay. She recently set the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.90 and is 23rd in the nation. Wang made the cut in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.42 and will swim in all four relays.

Competition will begin on Wednesday, March 19 and go through Saturday, March 22.
