Three Receive ECAC Weekly Honor

(DANBURY, Conn.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University swimmers and divers received recognition from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as Corvias ECAC South Athletes of the Week on Tuesday, January 17. Senior Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) of the women's team and sophomore Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) of the men's team were honored for their respective performances at their home tri-meet with Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, January 14.

Kaku was named the diver of the week for recording a season-best score for six dives on the 1-meter diving board when she won the event by 4.50 points with a score of 269.10. She also picked up a second-place finish on the 3-meter board with a score of 265.75.

Nicklas-Morris received rookie of the week after winning three events as the Tartans defeated Westminster, 262-38, and Geneseo, 177-123, in the team's first competition back from its winter training trip. The freshman first won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.05 before touching first in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.26. She finished her meet with a victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.10. It was the second time she won three individual events at a meet this year.

Chu earned swimmer of the week for winning both breaststroke events for the Tartan men, as they defeated Westminster, 213-77, and Geneseo, 157-140. Chu's time in the 100-yard breaststroke was 56.86 while he led a sweep of the 200-yard event in 2:09.32. The sophomore was also part of the 200-yard medley relay that touched first in 1:35.56.

The next event for the swimming and diving teams will be on January 21 at Denison University at 1:00 p.m.
