#5 Tartans Upend #4 Washington & Lee

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 5th nationally, hosted the #4 Generals of Washington and Lee University Saturday, March 31. After falling to the Generals 5-4 in the ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship, the Tartans got their revenge, defeating Washington & Lee 5-4 Saturday. Carnegie Mellon improves to 13-3 while the Generals are now 14-5.

With the match tied 1-1, the Tartans first doubles team of seniors Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) trailed Sonja Meighan and Trelsie Sadler 6-3 before winning six of the next seven games and claiming a 9-7 win.  The victory gave Carnegie Mellon the 2-1 edge heading into singles play.  

In singles play, the Cardinal and Gray took the first three points to seal the victory as the won at third, five and six singles.  Freshman Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) won a straight set match at third singles before fellow freshman Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) won a straight set match in the fifth spot. Senior Cze-Ja Tam (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) then won at six singles to give the Tartans the victory.
