Tartan Pair Just Miss Winning National Championship

(MOBILE, Ala.) – Senior women's tennis players Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) just missed winning the doubles championship at the USTA/ITA Division III National Small College Championships on Friday, October 14, in Mobile, Alabama. The Carnegie Mellon University pair was pinned up against University Athletic Association rival Gabrielle Clark and Zahra Dawson of Emory University.

The three-set match was tight until the end as Emory took set one 6-4 with the Tartans forcing the third with a 7-5 set two win. The Eagles then held strong in the third with a 6-4 win.

In the first set, the Tartans led 4-3 before Emory came back with three straight points to take the first set. Chen and Chin trailed once in the second set as Clark and Dawson only led 3-2 before the Tartan pair closed it out with the 7-5 win.

Emory took the lead from the start in the third match but the Tartan pair made them work for the victory saving two match points to make the score 5-4 before Emory was able to put it away 6-4.

The senior duo became just the second pair to reach the national final as Amy Staloch and Mona Iyer did the same in 2004.
