Tartans Move On; Win Regional Title for Third Time

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) – Led by three seniors, the #6 Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team won it's third regional title in the past four years, defeating host and #8 DePauw University 5-0 on Saturday, May 12 in Greencastle, Indiana. The Tartans swept through doubles play and received victories by their No. 2 and No. 3 singles players to finalize the win.

Seniors Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) started the scoring with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Kelly Gebert and Maggie MacPhail. The Tartans No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) then won 8-6 over Meg Crowley and Claire Marshall to help the visitors gain an important lead.

Senior Cze-Ja Tam (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) paired with sophomore Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) to defeat Caroline Emhardt and Julie Wittwer at No. 3 doubles 9-7 closing out the sweep.

Motie set the Tartans (18-5) up for match point over the Tigers (18-7) with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Marshall and Chen ended the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles over MacPhail.

Also playing singles was Cecil at No. 1 who was ahead 6-2, 4-0, Chin at No. 4 who was in a third set with 6-1, 3-6, 0-1 scores, freshman Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) at No. 5 who was down 2-6, 3-3 and Tam at No. 6 who was leading 6-2, 3-3 when the match ended.

The Tartans will now compete in the quarterfinals on Monday, May 21 in Cary, North Carolina.
