#5 Tartans Come up Short Against Four-Time Defending Division III Champions #1 Williams
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked fifth nationally, hosted the top ranked Ephs of Williams College Monday, March 19. The Tartans determination to upset the four-time defending national champions came short with a 6-3 setback. The loss moves Carnegie Mellon's dual-match record to 11-3 on the season and Williams remains unbeaten at 6-0.
The Tartans started the afternoon taking a 2-1 edge following doubles play. The freshman pair of Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) and Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) put the Tartans on the scoreboard first with an 8-6 victory at second doubles over Caroline Capute and Kathleen Elkins.
The doubles tandem of sophomore Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and freshman Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) trailed 7-4 at third doubles before forcing a tiebreaker. The duo then went on to win the tiebreaker 7-1 to claim the 9-8 victory making the score 2-0.
The Ephs took the first four points in singles action to clinch the victory. The Tartans lone win in singles came at the No. 2 spot as Cecil defeated Nancy Worley in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.
The Tartans will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. on Sunday, March 25 to face the #22 Eagles of the University of Mary Washington.
