#13 Women’s Tennis Upsets #7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Quarterfinals of ITA Team Indoor Championship

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 13th nationally, competed in the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Division III Women's Team Indoor Championship, Friday, March 2 on the campus of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.  The Tartans played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday and upset the seventh-ranked Athenas 8-1 to advance to the semifinals.  The win improves Carnegie Mellon's dual-match record to 7-1 on the season and CMS is now 3-1.

The Tartans started the afternoon with the doubles tandem of freshmen Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) winning 8-5 at third doubles.  Carnegie Mellon took a 2-0 advantage after the tandem of sophomore Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and freshman Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) won 9-7 at second doubles.

Carnegie Mellon's senior doubles pair of Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) completed the sweep in doubles play for the Tartans as they won 8-5 at first singles.  

The Cardinal and Gray's success rolled into singles play, as Cecil won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, giving the Tartans a 4-0 lead.  Minutes following Cecil's victory, Motie won at third singles 6-1, 6-1 to seal the Tartan victory.

The Tartans also claimed victories at four, five and six singles.  Chin won 6-2, 6-2 at the number four spot while Pratt won 3-6, 7-6, 11-9 at five and senior Cze-Ja Tam (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) won 6-3, 6-4 at six.  

Carnegie Mellon will play University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Washington University Saturday, March 3 in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m.  The #14 Bears upended #6 Denison University in another quarterfinal match.
