Tartans Open Dual Season with 8-1 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened its dual season with an 8-1 victory over Oberlin College on Friday, October 5 on its home court in Pittsburgh. The Tartans won all six singles matches after starting the match with two doubles victories.

Sophomore Lydia Utkin (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and senior Alexandra Tapak (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) opened with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles before sophomores Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) and Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Motie was the first to finish singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Preeya Shah of Oberlin. Sophomore Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) then won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Utkin won 6-4, 6-2 and No. 6 singles to secure the victory with the team's fifth point.

Also winning in singles action was freshman Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, freshman Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) at No. 2 singles 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) and junior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) at No. 1 singles 7-6, 6-2.

The Tartans will have the remainder of the fall off and be back in action in February win they host Slippery Rock University on February 8.
