#5 Tartans Compete in Finals of the 2013 Women’s Tennis ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team competed in the finals of the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championship, Sunday, March 3 on the campus of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.  The fifth-ranked Tartans played the 11th-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University and dropped a 5-4 match.  Carnegie Mellon's dual-match record is now 5-2 while the Blue Jays remain unbeaten at 3-0.

For the second straight day, the Tartan sophomore duo of Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Chelsea Motie (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) won the first point of the match as they downed Shannon Herndon and Abby Clark 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.  Carnegie Mellon jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as junior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and sophomore Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) won their fourth straight No. 1 doubles match.  Cecil and Pratt won 8-5 over Hailey Hogan and Elaine Baik.

Johns Hopkins cut the deficit in half with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles as the Tartans were ahead 2-1 going into singles play.

Carnegie Mellon took a 4-2 advantage with wins at No. 1 and 2 singles sandwiched with a setback at No. 3.  Motie finished off her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, in the second spot while Cecil won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1.  The two points by Motie and Cecil were the last for the Cardinal and Gray, as the Blue Jays won at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to claim the 2013 title.

The Tartans and Blue Jays will meet again on March 31 when Carnegie Mellon travels to Johns Hopkins for a 12:00 p.m. match.
