Women Dominate Division I Duquesne in 7-2 Win

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team won five of six singles matches and two doubles matches as they beat Division I Duquesne University on Friday evening, 7-2. 

After a loss at number two doubles, the Tartans went on to win the number one and number three doubles matches. The number one doubles pair of junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won 8-4 to get the first win for the Tartans. The number three doubles pair of senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) fought back from being down 4-1 to beat the Duquesne team, 9-7. 

Cecil was the first to finish her singles match as she swept her competitor 6-0 and 6-0 at number three singles.

Freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won a hard fought number four singles match.  In two games that kept going back and forth, she ended up winning 6-2 and 6-4.

To clinch the win for the Tartans, junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) beat her opponent in a tie-breaker.  After losing the first set 6-1, Pratt came back and won the second set 6-4. She then outplayed her competitor during the third set tie-breaker, winning 10-1 to clinch the victory at number one singles.

After winning in doubles, Pavia also grabbed a win playing number two singles.  She went on to beat her challenger 6-2 and 6-4.  Also grabbing a win for the Tartans in number five singles was Tsu.  Tsu won the first game 6-2, but dropped the second game 7-6(9-7).  Tsu came back determined and won in a tie-breaker 10-7.

The No. 8 Tartans will be back in action tomorrow, April 19, at noon against Kenyon College.
