Tartans End Run in NCAA Quarterfinals

(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team completed its season on Monday, May 19 in the national quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship held at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California. The Tartans dropped their contest to second-ranked Amherst College, 5-1, to end with a 19-5 overall record.

Playing without No. 1 doubles player and No. 2 singles player, freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) due to an injury, the Tartans found themselves down 2-1 after doubles play. Senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) defeated Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to tie the score at 1-1. A close No. 2 doubles match for junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) resulted in a 9-7 defeat.

In singles play, Amherst took the final three points it needed at the No. 4, No. 6 and No. 3 spots, respectively for the team win. As the match ended, Cecil was ahead 6-4, 5-2 at No. 2 singles, Pratt was leading 2-0 in her third set at No. 1 singles after winning the first 6-3 and sophomore Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) was up a set, 7-5, 1-4 at No. 5 singles.

The quarterfinals appearance was the Tartans fourth in six years, as they matched up with Amherst on three occasions.
