Tartans Start Play at ITA Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday, September 20 in Fredericksburg, Va. at University of Mary Washington. Four advanced to the round of 16 in singles play while two pairs reached the quarterfinals of doubles.

Senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis), who is seeded second, won both her matches on Saturday in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 Sunday. Pratt topped Sunaina Vohra of Johns Hopkins University 6-0, 6-2 and Nicole Russo 6-2, 6-2 of Franklin & Marshall.  Fellow senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) won 6-1, 6-2 over Sydney Diamond of Dickinson College and 6-2, 6-2 over McKinney Harwood of Christopher Newport University to also advance to play on Sunday.

Sophomore Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) started the regional with a three set victory.  The sophomore dropped her first set 7-5 to Caroline Mosberg of University of Mary Washington before winning 6-3 and 6-2 in sets two and three, respectively.  Torres then defeated Allison Hupalo of Washington and Lee University 6-0, 6-4 to advance to Sunday's rounds.

Freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) won 6-4, 7-5 against Alli Wong of Swarthmore College in her first match and then won in straight sets over Marla O'Bryan of Bridgewater College 6-0, 6-1.
    
In doubles, Raschke paired with freshman Stacy Chang (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and won 8-2 over Kait Brogran and Alina Suyama of Mary Washington before defeating Elaina Baik and Mikey Bathelmass of Johns Hopkins 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. The tandem will be joined in the quarterfinals by juniors Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) who also won a pair of matches on Saturday.  The junior duo won 8-4 over Roxanne Alban and Natalie Savage of Salisbury University and 8-1 against Wong and Jackie Lane of Swarthmore.
