Tartans Place Second at ITA National Team Indoor Championship

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked seventh in the nation, played in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship match for the fourth consecutive year, falling at the hands of fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 6-3, Sunday, March 1. The Tartans are now 7-2 on the year, while the Blue Jays move to 3-0.

Johns Hopkins held the lead after doubles with victories at the second and third spots. Senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) won for the third time in as many matches at the first spot, with an 8-4 victory against Ashnaa Rao and Shannon Herndon.

Senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles before the Blue Jays won two three-set matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Both matches needed a tiebreaker in the third before the match was decided.

Jody Law then defeated Sidell at No. 4 singles for the overall match point.

Raschke earned the Tartans final point with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles against Elaine Baik.

The Tartans will next travel to Claremont, California, for their annual spring break trip against more of the top competition in Division III. Monday, March 8 will serve as the team's first competition date when they face University of Rochester.
