No. 11 Tartans Top No. 18 Mary Washington for Fifth Straight Win

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team won its fifth straight contest and fifth match against a nationally ranked opponent on Sunday, April 10 when it faced 18th-ranked University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Viriginia. The 11th-ranked Tartans won the match 5-4 to move to 14-5 on the year.

A 2-1 lead belonged to the Tartans after doubles play as the visiting team earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Earning the wins were senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield), 8-5, at second doubles and senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South), 9-7, at third doubles.

Despite the close final score of 5-4, the Tartans wrapped up the match with three straight victories in singles play when Torres won at second singles, freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) at sixth singles and Tsu at first singles, all by straight sets. Torres defeated Caroline Mosberg, 6-0, 6-3, Selenica topped Chrissy Gaul, 6-1, 6-4, and Tsu defeated Kait Brogan, 6-2, 6-4.

Combined with the men's team victory against Mary Washington on Sunday, head coach Andrew Girard earned his 400th career win.

The Tartans will have the next two weeks off from competition as they prepare for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida, from Friday, April 22 to Sunday, April 24. The draw for the tournament is due out next week.
