#10 Tartans Open UAA Play With a 5-0 Win Over #20 NYU

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Thursday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with a 5-0 win over 20th-ranked NYU. The Tartans are now 16-6 overall and advance to the semifinals of the UAA Championships for the 16th consecutive year.

The Tartans started play with a 3-0 advantage after doubles play. The tandem of Freshman Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) grabbed the first point for the Cardinal and Gray with an 8-1 win at third doubles. The number one doubles pair of sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) then made the score 2-0 with an 8-4 victory.

Juniors Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at second doubles. The duo trailed 5-3 before taking the last five games.

Wu won 6-0, 6-3 at fourth singles before Taylor ended the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win at the first spot.

The Tartans will now face the nation's top team, Emory University, in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26.
