No. 14 Women’s Tennis Selected to Host NCAA Opening Rounds

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team has been selected to compete for the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship and will have the honor of hosting the first, second, and third rounds of competition. The appearance in the postseason event will be the 17th for the program, all coming under head coach Andrew Girard. The Tartans will host action on Thursday, May 4 through Saturday, May 6 with five teams traveling to Pittsburgh.

The Tartans will be joined in Pittsburgh by Hope College, Kenyon College, New York University, North Central College, and Otterbein University. Hope is making its 11th straight appearance in the tournament after winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and will be in Pittsburgh for the second straight year, along with North Central who won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament for the third consecutive year.

Kenyon defeated 19th-ranked Denison University in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament to win the program's 20th championship while Otterbein won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) for the second straight year to earn automatic qualification into the national tournament.

Hope (13-6) will face North Central (21-6) with 32nd-ranked Kenyon (18-4) and Otterbein (15-6) squaring off on Thursday to start the tournament. The Tartans (19-5) will face the winner of Hope and North Central on Friday while the winner of Kenyon and Otterbein will face 18th-ranked NYU (11-2) on Friday. NYU and the Tartans earned at-large bids to the championship with the Violets finishing third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and the Tartans fifth. The Violets earned the program's best finish in the UAA and first NCAA bid.

The two Friday winners will play on Saturday for the chance to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, from May 14-17.

The Tartans' home tennis venue is located in the center of campus with six playing courts, a video scoreboard and individual court cameras for live streaming. Should play get moved indoors, the tournament will be played at Alpha Tennis and Fitness in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
