#14 Tartans Fall in NCAA Quarterfinals to #1 Chicago

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team faced No. 1 University of Chicago in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday, May 14 in Orlando, Florida, at the USTA National Campus. The Tartans earned a point during doubles play but fell 5-1 in the match to the Maroons who finished as runner-up at last year's championship.

How it Happened

  • The first doubles pair of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou earned the only point of the match for the Tartans with an 8-7 victory over Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos.
  • The Maroons won both second doubles and third doubles by 8-5 scores.
  • In singles action, the Maroons won at the fifth, sixth, and second positions.
  • Taylor won her first set at first singles 6-2, before trailing 5-4 in the second when play stopped.
  • Freshman Divya Venkatarama also won her first set (6-4) and was headed to a third when play stopped.

  • The Tartans end the season with a 21-6 record, tying the school record for wins in a season.
  • The Tartans reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship for the seventh time in school history.
  • The win for Taylor and Zhou was their 28th as a pair this season.
