#10 Tartans Defeat #17 Case Western Reserve 6-3

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 10th nationally, hosted University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Case Western Reserve University Saturday night and defeated the Spartans 6-3. The Tartans are now 5-1 in dual play this year while the Spartans are 1-1.

How it Happened:

  • The Tartans fell behind 2-1 following doubles play as the Spartans grabbed two points at first and second doubles winning both by way of a tiebreaker.
  • Carnegie Mellon's third doubles tandem of sophomore Anika Joshi and freshman Elaine Qian claimed the lone point in doubles for the Cardinal and gray with an 8-5 victory.
  • Case Western Reserve extended its lead to 3-1 picking up the first point in singles play winning at the four spot.
  • The Tartans then won the next five points in singles play with the match clincher coming from Qian with a straight set victory in the sixth spot. She won by the scores of 6-3, 6-3. It marked her fourth team clinching point in the last five matches for the Tartans.
  • Junior Sarah Yang, senior Danna Taylor and sophomore Divya Venkatarama also won in straight sets at the top three spots, respectively.
  • Joshi finished the scoring with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win at five singles.

  • The Tartans will play in their 15th straight ITA National Team Indoor Championship with play beginning on Friday, March 1 in Lexington, Kentucky. The Tartans will open against the top ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 9:00 a.m.
