Tartans Advance to Third Round of NCAA Championship with 5-0 Win

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 15th in the nation, hosted 27th-ranked North Central College on Friday, May 10 in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. The Tartans won 5-0 to move to 14-6 for the season while North Central ends the season with a 24-8 record.

Inside the Results

  • The Tartans swept doubles action after the number one pair of senior Danna Taylor and junior Zoe Angell won a tiebreaker by an 8-7 (7-2) score.
  • The number three doubles pair of sophomore Anika Joshi and freshman Ainika Hou finished first with an 8-2 victory while the number two doubles pair of sophomore Divya Venkatarama and sophomore Anna Chow won 8-4.
  • Junior Sarah Yang earned the Tartans' fourth point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles against Abigail Penados.
  • Venkatarama ended the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at third singles.
  • The Tartans were leading by a set at fifth and sixth singles behind the play of Joshi and Chow.

Notes

  • Taylor won her 100th career doubles match with the victory at number one doubles.
  • The singles win for Venkatarama was her 22nd of the season.

The Tartans will face No.1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the third round on Saturday, May 10 at 12:00 p.m. on their home courts in Pittsburgh. The two teams faced each other in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with CMS winning, 6-1.
