Tartans Relays Perform Well at W&J Invitational

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team competed at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational Saturday, March 31.  The Cardinal and Gray had three first-place showings, as the relays ran well.

Freshman Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), freshman Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead), sophomore Kelsey Hallinen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and sophomore Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Harker School) ran to a first-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:10.08.

Guevel and Spalding joined by senior Ivana Moses (New Rochelle, N.Y./Phillips Exeter) and freshman Stephanie Chen (Vancouver, B.C./Crofton House School) finished second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 51.72.

Spalding and Guevel recorded the Tartans other first-place finishes as Spalding won the 200-meter race in 27.11 while Guevel won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.52.  Guevel's time set a meet record.

Hallinen recorded a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles as she crossed in 1:11.52 and Kiekhaefer finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:21.18.

Carnegie Mellon had two six-place finishes with freshman Hailey Brown (Wellsville, N.Y./Wellsville) crossing the finish line in 12:32.03 in the steeplechase and junior Carissa Iannone (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) throwing a distance of 31.19 meters in the javelin.

The team will be in competition again on Saturday, April 7 in Pittsburgh as they host their annual quad meet starting at 10:00 a.m.
