Tight Finish with Case Leads to Victory in Battle of the Obelisk

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team helped the Tartans take back the Obelisk Trophy in the Fifth Annual Battle of the Obelisk with Case Western Reserve University hosted by the Spartans. The women lost a tight battle by a score of 66-61 but helped the program win the trophy with a combined score of 149-105 with the men's team.

Junior Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) won the 55-meter dash in 7.57 and the 55-meter hurdles in 8.61 and finished second in the 200-meter dash in 27.89.

Sophomore Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) picked up a victory in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.27 and then won two field events with career-best marks. She won the long jump with a leap of 4.99 meters and the shot put with a throw of 10.43 meters.

Sophomore Halley Bayer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) ran the mile in 5:27.07 for the victory while senior Emily Wobb (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) won the 5,000-meter run in 17:59.80 with junior Elise Hall (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro Senior) finishing second in 18:27.62.

Sophomore Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) finished the 800-meter run in 2:29.62 for second place and was part of the distance medley relay that won in 12:51.70. Joining her was freshman Erin Persson (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall), Bayer and Wobb.

Junior Samantha Oleson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) closed the meet with a win in the weight throw with a career mark of 13.38 meters.

The Tartans will next travel to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell University Indoor Meet on Saturday, February 9.
