Tartans Win Four Events at Home Mini-Invite

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team hosted a five-team Mini-Invite and finished second with 129 points behind winner Waynesburg University with 171 points. The Tartans won four events and placed second in five events.

Sophomore Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) won the long jump for the Tartans with a career-best mark of 5.19m and later recorded a career-best mark in the shot put, placing fourth with a mark of 10.61m. Senior Tori Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Springside) was second in the high jump clearing 1.45m.

In the throwing events, senior Sarah Menio (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) finished fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 31.47m and junior Jane Kim (Clifton, Va./Centreville) took fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 30.76m

Senior Leila Bouabdellaoui (Parchment, Mich./Parchment) finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:25.01.

In the 1,500-meter run, Carnegie Mellon placed second through fourth with sophomore Erin Kiekhaefer (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) leading the way with a time of 4:49.24. Senior Emily Wobb (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) was third in 4:56.84 and sophomore Halley Bayer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was fourth in 4:57.96.

Junior Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.44 as freshman Jenna Asperslag (Carlsbad, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) was second in the 100-meter dash in 13.23 and junior Carineh Ghafafian (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) was third in the 400-meter run with a career-best time of 1:07.23.

In the 800-meter run, Bayer took third place with a season-best time of 2:25.44 before Guevel won her second event of the day, the 400-meter hurdles, in 1:03.86.

Two Tartans finished in the top three of the 200-meter dash as freshman Alexandra Lewis (Milford, N.J./The Taft School) placed second in 27.70 with Asperslag finishing third in 27.80.

The Tartans closed the meet with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.39 from Kiekhaefer, Spalding, Ghafafian and Guevel.

The team will host its final meet of the season next week on Saturday, April 6 starting at 10:00 a.m.
