Guevel Wins Both Hurdles Titles as Tartans Finish Sixth at UAA Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) - Junior Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) won both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships to lead the Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team to sixth place.

Guevel set season best times in both events winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.43 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.23. The wins mark the second time for her career that she swept both events at the championships and her times rank her ninth and fourth in the nation respectively in the events.

Sophomore Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in 26.56 while sophomore Halley Bayer (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was seventh in the 5,000-meter run in 18:15.27 as junior Elise Hall (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro Senior) finished eighth in 18:27.89 to all score points for the Tartans.

In the field, senior Sarah Menio (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) finished sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 32.73m and senior Carissa Iannone (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) placed eigth in the javelin with a mark of 28.61m.

Despite not placing, senior Tori Baggio (Coopersburg, Pa./Springside) cleared a career best 1.51m in the high jump to close out her career.

The team will next compete at the Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College on Friday, May 10.
