Tartans Start Season with Promising Marks at WVU

(MORGANTOWN, W.Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's indoor track and field team is looking forward to the indoor season with a great start at the West Virginia Universtiy Invitational Saturday, January 18.

Senior standout Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) led the team with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 8.25.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Guevel, sophomore Alexandra Lewis (Milford, N.J./The Taft School), senior Kelsey Hallinen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), and freshman Ariel Tian (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) grabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:33.92.  Lewis was also able to take an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (28.61).

Also on the track for the Tartans, junior Sara Kelly (Madison, Wis./West) and freshman Emily Joyce (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) took sixth and seventh place, respectively, in the 3000-meter run.  Kelly finished with a time of 11:45.82 and Joyce crossed the line just behind her in 11:49.46.

Leading the women in the field, freshman Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) tied for sixth place in the high jump clearing a mark of 1.55 meters. 

The Tartans will continue the indoor season next Friday, January 24 when they compete at the Youngstown State University Invitational.
