Tartans Open Outdoor Season With Solid Marks

(LEXINGTON, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22 with several great performances.

Senior Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) led the Tartans with a first and second place finish over the weekend.  Guevel grabbed the title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.86.  She also grabbed a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.54.

Junior Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) had a great weekend in the field grabbing a first-place title in the shot put and third-place in the long jump.  Spalding threw the shot put 10.51 meters and leaped 5.02 meters in the long jump.

Also in the field for the Tartans, senior Samantha Oleson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) placed second in the shot put with a toss of 10.32 meters and fourth in the discus and hammer with throws of 29.53 meters and 33.60 meters, respectively.

Senior Colette Tano (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) had a solid throw of 33.60 meters to begin her outdoor season in the hammer.

Freshman Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) had an outstanding performance in the high jump, gliding over the bar set at 1.59 meters.

The Tartans will be competing next at home on Saturday, March 29.
