Yee Wins Third Pole Vault Title; Tartans in Fourth After First Day of UAA Outdoor Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team is currently in fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships after the first day of competition on the campus of the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

Senior Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) successfully defended her pole vault title when she won the event for the third consecutive year. On Saturday, she cleared the bar at 3.61 meters. Two others scored points in the event for the Tartans when junior Sarah Miholer (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) cleared 3.16 meters to place seventh and freshman Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) cleared 2.86 meters, tying for eighth place.

Junior Kiersten Chuc (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.55 meters on Saturday while freshman Julianne Igbokwe (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) was fifth in the shot put with a mark of 10.88 meters.

Sophomore Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) recorded a season-best 5.15 meters in the long jump to place sixth and earn points for the Tartans.

In the running events, the Tartans qualified for five event finals while the 4x800-meter relay team of graduate student Erin Persson (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall), senior Ariel Tian (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional), sophomore Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J./Madison), and junior Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) placed third in a time of 9:27.52.

The remainder of the meet will take place on Sunday, April 22 with field events kicking off at 10:00 a.m. and running events starting at 11:30 a.m. Team champions shall be crowned around 2:40 p.m. CT.
