Tartans Compete at Three Events to Open the 2021-22 Women's Track and Field Season

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team began the 2021-22 season at three different events hosted by Youngstown State University, Case Western Reserve University and Edinboro University.

Freshman Taylor Symonette (Westport, Conn. / Staples) had an impressive start to her collegiate career with a first-place showing in the shot put at Case Western Reserve with a toss of 11.83m. The mark is second-best all-time in Carnegie Mellon history.

Freshman Lauren McKenna (Edgewater, Md. / South River) and freshman Avery Tompkins (Kingsley, Pa. / Scranton Preparatory) finished first and second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:01.40 and 11:15.96, respectively, during the meet at Case Western Reserve.

Senior Ashley Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) had a personal-best finish in the pole vault when she cleared 3.15m to place fourth while freshman Rhythm Satav (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro) had a second-place showing in the 800-meter run in 2:35.55, both coming at Case Western Reserve.

Three third-place finishes came from freshman Samiyah Hargrove (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.37 seconds, junior Carmen Andrade (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico / Ramey) in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.47 and junior Serena Li (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) in the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m.

The top performance from YSU was from junior Mona Yuan (Sayreville, N.J. / Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences) in the 800-meter run which she finished in 2:26.68 to place ninth overall.

Junior Liz Barre (Ithaca, N.Y. / Taft) competed at the Edinboro University Mike Kowal Multi-Meet on Saturday. The junior recorded top finish in the 60-meter hurdles to help her place second in the pentathlon with 3,162 points, finishing three points out of first. Barre crossed in 9.26 seconds. She placed third in the high jump and long jump, clearing the bar at 1.60 meters and recording a distance of 4.97 meters. Barre finished eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.22 and seventh in the shot put with a throw of 8.58 meters.

The Tartans will be idle until January 21 when the compete at the Youngstown State University Collegiate Invitational.
