Tartans Win Three at Hiram Invitational

(HIRAM,) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team competed at the Hiram College Invitational Friday and Saturday, September 7-8.  The Tartans won three of four over the weekend moving their overall record to 3-6.  

Carnegie Mellon started the invitational with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20) win over Capital University.  Junior Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) led the Tartans with 15 kills while sophomore Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) recorded 14 and junior Rachel Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) had 12.  Junior setter Emily Wright (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) picked up 40 assists.  Defensively, sophomore Ali Nichols (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) had 22 digs, Parsa had 15 and Millers totaled 14 in the win.

The Tartans then faced Geneva College and lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22).  Leading the charge for the Cardinal and Gray against the Golden Tornadoes Celentano tallied 11 kills.

On Saturday, Carnegie Mellon picked up a pair of wins.  The first win came against the host Hiram 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17) before topping Frostburg State University 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-15). In the win over Hiram, Parsa and Celentano each had 12 kills while Miller had 11.  Wright ended the contest with 35 assists and three service aces.  Also recording three service aces was Parsa. Defensively, Nichols had 18 digs with Parsa adding 10.  Junior Olivia Mora (San Antonio, Texas/St. Mary's Hall)  ended with three block solos.

Parsa led the attack over Frostburg with nine kills.  Freshman Rebecca Wolfinger (Pleasnaton, Calif./Amador Valley) posted eight kills while fellow freshman Emily Lawlis (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) added 21 assists.

The Tartans will be back on the court on Tuesday, September 11, as they entertain St. Vincent at 7:00 p.m.
