Tartans Take Three Wins at the York College Spartan Invitational

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team travelled to York, Pennsylvania to compete and win three of four games at the York College Spartan Invitational Friday and Saturday, September 27-28. The Tartans are now 15-4 on the season.

Their first match Friday was against Farleigh Dickinson where the Tartans took down the Knights 3-0.  Junior and outside hitter, Ali Celantano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic), had 15 kills and four block assists.  Mary Stadelman (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had an impressive showing as well with nine kills and a kill percentage of .571. 

Defensive specialists Ali Nichols (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla. / Vero Beach) had 12 digs and eight digs, respectively.

Their second match Friday evening was against the host school, York College.  The Tartans had another shut-out winning 3-0. 

Stadelman again had an outstanding showing with nine kills. Senior, Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) added seven kills to the total.  Also helping the offense was Emily Lawlis (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) contributing 24 assists. 

On the defensive front, Celantano and Nichols had 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Freshman Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) had three solo blocks.

The competition continued on Saturday morning with a game against Moravian College.  Adding another sweep to their streak, the Cardinal and Gray Tartans beat the Blue and Grey Greyhounds 3-0.

Parsa had an outstanding match adding 13 kills to her season total as well as 14 digs.  Lawlis had 34 assists and Nichols added 19 more digs to her total. 

In their final game of the tournament the Tartans fell to Stevenson University who is currently ranked 20th overall in Division III and is currently undefeated on the season. 

The Tartans did not go down without a fight, as Celantano killed 17 and had nine block assists in the five set match.  Parsa added 12 kills and played great defense at the net adding three solo blocks to her season total. 

Lawlis had 40 assists in the match and Higgins added three service aces as the Tartans ended their weekend-long tournament 3-1.

The Tartans will be competing next weekend at Case Western University for the first of two UAA Round Robins.
